PESHAWAR: At least 22 people have died and 23 others were injured in rain-related incidents and flash floods across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa since July 19, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
In a statement issued on Friday, the PDMA said the deceased included nine men, three women and 10 children, while the injured comprised 11 men, five women and seven children.
The authority said 37 houses were damaged during the recent spell of heavy rains and flash floods, including 29 partially damaged and eight completely destroyed homes.
The affected districts include Peshawar, Nowshera, Khyber, Mardan, Buner, Bajaur, Shangla, Swabi, Upper and Lower Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Tank, Torghar, Kurram, North Waziristan and South Waziristan.
The PDMA said Rescue 1122, district administrations and other relevant agencies remain on high alert and continue rescue and relief operations in the affected areas. Local administrations have been directed to ensure the timely provision of relief supplies and expedite assistance to affected families.
Officials said water levels in the province’s rivers and streams remain within normal limits, but intermittent rainfall is expected to continue. All district administrations have been instructed to remain vigilant and monitor the evolving situation.
PDMA Director General urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from flood-prone areas and vulnerable tourist destinations, and strictly follow official weather advisories and safety instructions.
Meanwhile, in Bajaur district, a two-year-old girl was killed and four others were injured after the roof of a house collapsed in Batwar village of Salarzai tehsil during heavy rainfall.
The deceased was identified as Tamima, while the injured included the homeowner, 60-year-old Niaz Mohammad, and three women. Rescue teams shifted the injured to a nearby hospital for treatment.
