Climate Information Portal ‘Climate Sangat’ Launched in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: A new online platform, Climate Sangat, has been launched in Islamabad to provide journalists, researchers, policymakers and the public with reliable information and resources on climate change.

The web portal was introduced during Climate Baithak, a consultation jointly organised by IRADA and International Media Support (IMS). The event brought together climate and environmental journalists, academics, fact-checkers and civil society representatives to discuss how digital knowledge-sharing can improve climate reporting and raise public awareness.

During the session, technical expert and Climate Sangat co-designer Waqas Naeem demonstrated the platform’s key features, highlighting its role as a central hub for climate-related information, research and educational resources.

According to the developers, the portal is built around three main sections. The Media Hub offers journalists access to research, data, reporting tools and other news resources. The Community Action section highlights locally led climate initiatives, innovative solutions and community success stories from across Pakistan. Meanwhile, the Learning Centre provides educational materials, including an Urdu glossary of climate change terminology aimed at promoting a common understanding of climate-related concepts.

The platform also features a Climate Directory, bringing together experts, researchers and practitioners working on climate issues. Organisers said the directory is intended to strengthen collaboration among media professionals, policymakers, academics and civil society organizations involved in climate action.

Speaking at the launch, IRADA Executive Director Muhammad Aftab Alam said misinformation and misleading narratives about climate change continue to spread rapidly, making access to credible information increasingly important.

He said Climate Sangat has been developed to serve as a trusted source of climate knowledge, enabling users to access verified information, research and practical resources that support informed reporting and evidence-based discussions on climate issues.

Participants at the consultation welcomed the initiative and described it as a positive step toward strengthening climate communication in Pakistan. They also proposed several improvements to enhance the platform, including publishing policy briefs in regional languages, adding historical weather records and introducing interactive climate maps to provide more localized information for users.

Organisers said the suggestions will help expand the portal’s usefulness and further support efforts to improve climate literacy, encourage informed public debate and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders working to address Pakistan’s growing climate challenges.
