Punjab Launches Green Transport Policy To Reduce Official Vehicle And Fuel Expenses

LAHORE: The Punjab government has introduced the Punjab Transport Policy 2026, bringing new restrictions on the use of official vehicles and fuel allowances for police officers as part of efforts to improve transparency, strengthen oversight and reduce transport-related expenditures.

Under a directive issued by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Telecommunication and Transport, all police formations, including the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Motor Transport, have been instructed to implement the new policy with immediate effect.

As part of the reforms, police officers have been directed to return any government vehicles exceeding their authorised entitlement. Vehicles currently assigned to departmental projects will also be handed back to their respective departments to improve fleet management.

The policy introduces revised vehicle and fuel entitlements based on officers’ ranks.

Under the new framework, the Inspector General (IG) Punjab will be entitled to a 2,800cc official vehicle with 500 litres of fuel for official duties. A 4,700cc vehicle may be used for out-of-station visits, with fuel provided according to operational requirements. The IG will also receive a 1,800cc vehicle for personal use along with 300 litres of fuel.

Additional Inspectors General (Grade 21) will be allocated a 1,800cc personal vehicle with 250 litres of fuel, while a 2,800cc vehicle will be available for official travel.

Deputy Inspectors General (Grade 20) will receive a 1,500cc official vehicle and 250 litres of fuel.

The policy also defines vehicle and fuel entitlements for Regional Police Officers, District Police Officers, Senior Superintendents of Police, Superintendents of Police and Deputy Superintendents of Police, with fuel allocations to remain within limits approved by the Finance Department.

Senior Superintendents of Police (Grade 18) will be entitled to a 1,500cc official vehicle and 200 litres of fuel.

According to the Punjab government, the new transport policy standardises fuel consumption limits, tightens controls over official vehicle allocation and aims to ensure more efficient use of public resources while improving accountability within the Punjab Police.
