11 killed as monsoon rains trigger house collapse in KP, landslides in Gilgit-Baltistan

PESHAWAR: At least 11 people, mostly women and children, were killed after the roof of a mud-brick house collapsed during heavy overnight rain in Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rescue and police officials said on Tuesday.

According to Bilal Faizi, spokesperson for the provincial emergency service, rescue teams recovered all 11 bodies from the debris and handed them over to their families for burial.

Meanwhile, heavy monsoon rains also battered Gilgit-Baltistan on Monday, triggering landslides that blocked several roads and damaged homes in different areas, according to regional emergency authorities.

In view of the worsening weather conditions, the government has advised tourists to avoid unnecessary travel to northern Pakistan due to the increased risk of landslides and flash floods.

Pakistan experiences heavy monsoon rains every year, often leading to floods, landslides and infrastructure damage, particularly in mountainous and low-lying areas.

The country continues to face growing climate-related risks. In 2022, record monsoon rains and catastrophic flooding submerged nearly one-third of Pakistan, claiming 1,739 lives and causing an estimated $30 billion in economic losses.
