It is often difficult for people to recognize poems written by Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. This claim was made in a recent study.
The research conducted by the University of Pittsburgh in the United States discovered that poetry enthusiasts often perceive AI-generated poems as written by humans. In this study, participants were shown poems written by 10 famous English poets as well as poems written by ChatGPT 3.5 in the style of those poets.
The results revealed that there was a 75% chance of correctly identifying poems written by real poets compared to those created by AI technology. The study also found that people rated AI-generated poems as more high-quality than those written by real poets.
According to the researchers, the reason why people prefer AI-generated poetry is that it is simpler and easier to understand. In contrast, the complexity and other aspects of real poets’ works contribute to the appeal of their poems.
The researchers explained that real poems often contain deeper meanings, whereas AI’s creative work lacks such depth. Most people may not grasp the deep meanings of poetry, which is why they prefer AI-generated poems, where everything is presented in a simple manner.
While AI technology can almost perfectly replicate the creative work of renowned poets, the researchers argue that a good poet’s work goes beyond algorithms, containing emotions, surprise, empathy, revelations, and other complex elements.
They concluded that readers find it challenging to recognize machine-generated text, and people tend to believe that AI technology cannot replicate human experiences.
