Upholding the right to self-determination of occupied Kashmir, the UN approved a resolution plebiscite in the Held Valley
Every year, 5 January is celebrated as Occupied Kashmir Right to Self-Determination Day because the United Nations passed a resolution guaranteeing a free and fair referendum in Occupied Kashmir on 5 January 1949.
The day is celebrated to remind the global community that it cannot ignore its responsibility towards the unfinished agenda of the sub-continent – resolving the Kashmir dispute.
The United Nations (UN) owes it to Pakistan and the people of Kashmir to live up to its commitments made 74 years ago.

The right to self-determination is a fundamental right under the United Nations Charter, the denial of which is a violation of this Universal Declaration and its treaties. The international community has a legal and moral obligation to fulfill its promises to the Kashmiri people
India’s actions have been widely condemned by the international community, the United Nations and international human rights organizations. India’s illegal actions of August 5, 2019 and the recent decision of the Supreme Court of India are an attempt to colonize this disputed territory in violation of the UN and international laws.
Pakistan will continue to provide moral, political and diplomatic support to the people of Occupied Kashmir until they achieve their right to self-determination through UN Security Council resolutions.
The United Nations recently passed a Pakistan-sponsored resolution on the universal realization of the right of peoples to self-determination, which was supported by a large number of countries.
The United Nations must deliver on its promises to the Kashmiri people and give the Kashmiri people the opportunity to decide their future through a free and fair referendum.
