Spanish scientists have warned that many foods marketed as protein-rich are actually high in fat.
The study indicates that these foods, which claim to strengthen and tone muscles, could potentially contribute to weight gain. The researchers analyzed over 500 items and found that only 1 in 10 was truly healthy. More than a quarter of the items were high in sugar and saturated fats, while 20% contained artificial sweeteners.
Miguel Hernández University scientists emphasized that consumers often consider foods claiming to be high in protein as healthy, which is a mistaken belief. Many people are unaware of the potential negative effects of other ingredients in these foods on their health.
The study examined 561 food items claiming to be protein-rich, including plant-based meat alternatives (68.2%), snack bars (35.3%), and high-protein yogurts or sweet dairy products (21.3%).
