The Zimbabwean government has announced a new requirement for WhatsApp group admins to obtain a license. This move is aimed at curbing misinformation and increasing accountability on social media.
According to foreign news agencies, the government has set different license fees based on the nature of the group, with fees ranging from $50 to $2500.
Zimbabwe’s Minister of Information, Monica Mutsvangwa, stated that the licensing process will help identify sources of false news that cause violence and chaos.
As part of the licensing process, group admins will need to provide private information, which may raise privacy concerns.
The government has defended its action, stating that it is necessary to maintain security and law and order in the country.
