The US House of Representatives has passed a bill that prohibits transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports, specifically barring individuals who transition from male to female from competing in female categories.
According to global news agencies, the bill was introduced by the Republican Party, which holds the majority in Congress. It was supported by 218 members.
The bill defines gender based on reproductive biology and genetics at birth, meaning individuals who transition from male to female will not be allowed to compete as women in sports.
This bill comes in response to ongoing criticism of transgender issues, especially related to youth and sports participation, within the LGBTQ policies of the Biden administration. Former President Donald Trump had previously criticized these policies, stating he would eliminate transgender issues if he were elected again.
The bill still needs approval from the Senate, where the Republicans require 60 votes for passage, making it difficult to pass without support from the opposing party. If the bill is passed in the Senate, transgender athletes in women’s teams at federally funded schools or universities will be removed.
Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, stated that Republican members are once again standing up for women’s rights, which he claims are being taken advantage of by transgender individuals. However, Democrats and human rights organizations have opposed the bill, calling it another attempt to deny transgender youth dignity and respect.
