British higher education leaders, along with British Council officials, visited COMSATS University of Islamabad (CUI). The visit focuses on establishing regular contacts with individuals and institutions and partnerships with UK universities.
The delegation visited Pakistan from April 21 to 27 under the Pak-UK Education Gateway, a collaborative project between HEC and the British Council. The visit included representatives from the University of Glasgow, University of Salford, Cardiff University, University of London, Queen’s University of London, Staffordshire University, University of Exeter, INTO University and Bangor University. The delegation was also attended by senior officials from the UK Department of Business and Trade, the Department for Education and Students and the British Council.
Chancellor of CUI Prof. Dr. Sajid Qamar welcomed the delegates on behalf of COMSATS University and shared the historical exchange with England that contributed to the development of CUI as one of the leading educational institutions in Pakistan. In his congratulatory speech, Chancellor Professor Sajid Qamar said, “CUI has a long-standing relationship with universities in the UK. It is really heartening to see the leaders of UK higher education here to explore and explore more opportunities and opportunities for our teachers and students to work with the university English.” He thanked the Scottish Higher Education Chamber of Commerce for their partnership in providing scholarships to CUI female students.
Dr. Hammad Omer, T.I., International Office, informed the delegates about CUI’s past relationship with the UK. Former British Prime Minister Lord Cameron announced that he had visited CUI in April 2011. About 20 cooperation agreements have been signed with British universities. Since the beginning, more than 190 delegates from British higher education institutions have visited CUI, and more than 110 CUI staff have visited various UK research and development organizations and universities. One hundred and fifty (150) English graduates now serve as faculty, officers and staff across all CUI universities, further strengthening the ongoing relationship between our nations.
A memorandum of understanding on research cooperation between the University of Glasgow and COMSATS University of Scotland was signed at the event. During the visit, the delegation interacted with faculty and students. A certificate distribution ceremony is also organized by the university for recipients of Scottish Scholarships for CUI students. On behalf of the Scottish Higher Education Trade Representative and the UK delegation, Professor Moira Boland, Dean for Global Engagement – Central and South Asia, said: “We are delighted to be here and look forward to what we can achieve together. “How can we forge mutual cooperation benefits between Britain and Pakistan?”
Ms. Sarah Parvez, Head of Education, British Council Pakistan has announced that the British Council plans to launch the second phase of the Pak-UK Education Gateway project in May 2024 as per the latest directive from the Prime Minister of Pakistan. The project will promote collaboration between UK universities and Pakistani universities. This will help create opportunities for students, faculty and research collaboration.
