GILGIT-BALTISTAN: A major Rs17.2 billion rural development and climate resilience project has been formally signed to support communities across all districts of Gilgit-Baltistan.
The project focuses on improving access to clean water, renewable energy, climate-resilient housing and disaster preparedness in remote and vulnerable communities.
Under the initiative, 216 water supply schemes will be developed, while micro-hydel and solar energy systems are expected to provide a combined capacity of around 1,200 to 1,300 kilowatts.
The project also includes the green retrofitting of around 3,000 homes and construction of 700 climate-resilient and energy-efficient houses.
According to the project details, around 43,200 households are expected to benefit from the initiative. At least 40 percent participation by women has also been set as a target.
Another major component is a comprehensive assessment of disaster risks in all 110 union councils of Gilgit-Baltistan. The assessment is expected to help identify local vulnerabilities and support better planning for climate-related hazards and natural disasters.
The initiative goes beyond physical infrastructure by linking rural development with water security, clean energy, improved sanitation, climate resilience and livelihood opportunities.
Gilgit-Baltistan is highly exposed to climate-related risks, including floods, landslides, glacial hazards and water-related challenges. Investments in resilient infrastructure, renewable energy and local preparedness can help communities better cope with these risks.
However, the long-term impact of the project will depend on timely completion, quality construction, transparent monitoring and the continued involvement of local communities. Ensuring that water, energy and housing schemes remain functional after completion will be essential for delivering lasting benefits to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
