Pakistan To Phase Out Machine-Readable Passports, Shift Fully To E-Passports

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to discontinue the issuance of machine-readable passports and move towards a fully electronic passport system across Pakistan and its missions abroad.

According to media reports, the Ministry of Interior has informed the National Assembly that the issuance of machine-readable passports is expected to be phased out within the next month. Once the transition is completed, passport offices across the country and Pakistani diplomatic missions overseas will issue e-passports only.

However, existing machine-readable passports will remain valid until their expiry dates. Holders will not be required to replace them immediately solely because of the policy change.

Transition To E-Passports

The move is part of the government’s efforts to modernise Pakistan’s passport system and expand the use of digital travel documents. E-passports contain an embedded electronic chip that stores biometric and identity information, helping strengthen document security and facilitate automated border processing.

Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhary reportedly told the National Assembly that the transition could face some delays because of Pakistan’s large population and administrative challenges faced by passport offices.

Despite these challenges, the government remains committed to implementing the new system within approximately one month.

Existing Passports To Remain Valid

The planned transition will not invalidate machine-readable passports that have already been issued. They will continue to be accepted until their stated expiry dates.

Once the new policy is fully implemented, however, applicants seeking a new passport or renewal are expected to receive an e-passport instead of a conventional machine-readable document.

The shift is expected to mark a significant step towards a more secure and digitally integrated passport system in Pakistan.
