LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has highlighted the provincial government’s efforts to tackle air pollution, expand green cover and strengthen data-driven environmental governance, describing the initiatives as part of Punjab’s broader transition towards a greener and more sustainable future.
Speaking at the China International Big Data Industry Expo, the chief minister highlighted measures taken over the past two years to address the province’s longstanding smog and air pollution challenges.
The government has emphasized sustained environmental action, including efforts to increase forest and green cover and improve the use of technology and data in environmental governance.
The initiatives are aimed at addressing major sources of air pollution while supporting a cleaner, healthier and more climate-resilient Punjab.
The chief minister’s remarks come as Punjab continues to face seasonal air-quality challenges, particularly during the winter months when weather conditions can trap pollutants close to the ground.
The provincial government has been pursuing measures targeting emissions from transport, industry, agriculture and other sources, alongside plantation and environmental awareness initiatives.
The use of data-driven governance is also expected to strengthen the monitoring of environmental conditions and support more informed decision-making.
Punjab’s environmental agenda increasingly focuses on moving beyond short-term responses to smog towards longer-term measures aimed at improving air quality, expanding green spaces and strengthening climate resilience.
