Prime minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif while addressing the UN Climate Change Conference Cop 29 held in Baku, Azerbaijan has claimed of energy transition in the country by end of the decade.
He stated that 60 percent of overall energy will be produced from clean sources and 30 percent of the total vehicles of the country will be shifted to electric vehicles by ender of 2030.
The prime minister reiterated his commitment of taking solid measures in the regarding to fulfill the obligation.
He termed climate justice base of real resilience and said that he doesn’t want other countries to face the plight Pakistan faced back in 2022. Declaring Pakistan, a resilient and hardworking nation, he said that we are fully committed to being part of the global climate solutions.
In the prevailing situation, it doesn’t seem that the incumbent government will be able to fulfill its commitment of energy transition.
The country is facing a multifaceted energy crisis, compounded by political instability and economic stagnation at present.
The government firstly needs to accomplish country energy needs before working on projects of clean energy.
On the other hand, the tenure of the sitting government will end in 2028. Keeping in view the past practices of country’s political history, another question is that whether it will be given opportunity to complete its tenure.
If the government completes its tenure, it can’t be confirmed that the same political party will come into the power after next general election.
In case of failure to fulfill its pledges regarding transition of energy, it will have an excuse it was not given chance to achieve the task.
