Islamabad, August 1: Pakistani authorities have issued a flood alert after India released water from the Salal Dam for the 11th consecutive time, increasing river inflows and prompting disaster management agencies to remain on high alert.
According to official sources, Pakistan is expected to receive an inflow of approximately 90,000 cusecs, leading authorities to enhance flood monitoring and emergency preparedness across vulnerable areas.
Officials said that while water flows in most of the country’s major rivers remain within normal limits, low to medium-level flooding continues at several locations along the Indus River.
The Indus River is currently experiencing medium-level flooding at Sukkur Barrage, while low-level flooding has been reported at Kalabagh, Chashma, and Guddu barrages. A low-level flood has also been recorded at Head Balloki on the Ravi River.
Authorities said river flows at most monitoring points on the Jhelum, Chenab, Sutlej, Ravi, and Kabul rivers remain stable. Water discharge has, however, declined at Chacharan Sharif and Benazir Bridge, where outflow was measured at 218,978 cusecs.
Reservoir levels have also continued to rise. The water level at Tarbela Dam has reached 1,539 feet, bringing the reservoir to 89 percent of its storage capacity, close to the level recorded during the same period last year. Meanwhile, Mangla Dam has exceeded 1,196 feet, with storage reaching 57 percent of its total capacity.
Authorities said district administrations, irrigation departments, and rescue agencies have been instructed to remain vigilant, monitor vulnerable low-lying areas, and maintain emergency response readiness as monsoon conditions continue to pose flood risks
