A study has revealed that older men who complain of fatigue are at an increased risk of cancer, ranking it as one of the top four major diseases.
Experts state that while many people visit their doctors with new symptoms of fatigue, determining the underlying cause can be challenging.
The study reviewed 237 conditions and found that fatigue was commonly linked to depression, respiratory infections, insomnia, and thyroid issues (in women), though the associations varied based on age and gender.
The research showed that among men aged 80 and above, cancer was the fourth most common condition for those experiencing fatigue, compared to those who did not report fatigue. In contrast, cancer ranked 13th among women of the same age.
Researchers suggest that doctors should prioritize cancer diagnoses for men aged 70 or older who report fatigue.
