Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio began his environmental journey at a remarkably young age. In 1998, when he was just 24, he launched the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation with a focus on protecting the environment, wildlife and vulnerable ecosystems. The initiative gave him a platform to support environmental causes alongside his successful acting career.
Over the years, the foundation expanded its work internationally. According to the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, it supported more than 200 projects across 50 countries, providing over $80 million in grants. Its areas of focus included wildlife conservation, forests, oceans, climate change, Indigenous communities, renewable energy and environmental research.
DiCaprio also used filmmaking and public advocacy to raise awareness about environmental challenges. He was involved in the 2007 documentary The 11th Hour and appeared in the climate-focused documentary Before the Flood. The latter reportedly reached around 60 million viewers during its first three months, bringing climate issues to a broader mainstream audience.
His environmental work has continued alongside his Hollywood career, spanning conservation groups, research initiatives, documentaries and climate advocacy. From launching his foundation at 24 to supporting projects around the world, DiCaprio’s environmental activities have become a significant part of his public work beyond the film industry.
