PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has introduced monthly sanitation fees as part of efforts to improve cleanliness and strengthen waste management in urban areas.
According to an official circular, residential properties will be charged Rs100, Rs150 or Rs200 per month, depending on plot size. A monthly fee of Rs250 has been fixed for commercial shops.
Hotels, petrol pumps, factories and major business centres will be charged Rs1,000 per month under the new system.
Mosques, seminaries, government schools and other specified institutions have been exempted from the sanitation fee.
The fee collection is scheduled to begin in October 2026.
The provincial government has also urged citizens to cooperate with the cleanliness initiative by keeping their surroundings clean and disposing of household and commercial waste only at designated locations.
The move is aimed at developing a more effective sanitation and waste management system across urban areas. Proper waste collection and disposal can help reduce litter, improve public health and limit pollution of streets, drains and local water sources.
For the system to deliver lasting environmental benefits, regular waste collection, proper disposal facilities, transparent use of sanitation funds and public participation will remain important.
