China’s Huawei Technologies on Friday made breakthroughs in fields from artificial intelligence to operating systems, surpassing what the United States and Europe have done in a decade, Reuters reported.
At the start of a three-day developer conference in the southern Chinese city of Dongguan, Richard Yu, head of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, announced that more than 900 million devices now have the company’s Harmony operating system.
“Harmoni has made progress. In terms of building the core technology of an independent operating system after 10 years, you can say that it took our European and American colleagues more than 30 years,” he said.
Huawei introduced its proprietary operating system, HarmonyOS, in 2019 after Google cut support for the Android operating system used in smartphones due to US technology restrictions.
According to Yuu, Ascend, the most powerful artificial intelligence infrastructure made by a Chinese company, is now second in popularity to Nvidia, which controls most of the AI chip market.
Europe and the United States have long held monopolies in operating systems and other software, but Huawei has an opportunity to push them in the Internet of Things era, he said.
Huawei’s smartphone industry has experienced a resurgence since last year’s introduction of improved chips made in China. Smartphone and Harmony sales rose 68% in the first five months of the year.
According to research firm Counterpoint, Huawei’s HarmonyOS is second only to Android as the most popular mobile operating system in China in the first quarter of 2024 with a 17 percent share.
