According to the French news agency, 59-year-old German aerospace engineer Rüdiger Koch has set a world record for the longest time spent underwater. The German citizen spent 120 days in a 320 square foot capsule beneath the sea off the coast of Panama. Four cameras monitored his mental health and filmed his daily activities inside the capsule.
Previously, the record for the most time spent underwater was held by American Joseph Dituri, who spent 100 days submerged in a lake in Florida.
Inside the capsule, all essential items were provided, including a bed, a toilet, a TV, a computer, the internet, and even an exercise bike. The capsule was connected to an above-water chamber to maintain communication with the outside world. A ladder was attached to provide access for food and supplies, and solar panels and a backup generator provided electricity.
Rüdiger Koch stated that this experience would change how we think about human life, suggesting that we could live permanently in the sea. He emphasized that their goal was to prove that the ocean can be a viable environment for human habitation.
