SIALKOT: The Department of Law at The Grand Asian University Sialkot (GAUS), in collaboration with the Youth Forum for Kashmir (YFK), organized a seminar on “The Indus Waters Treaty: International Humanitarian Law and Contemporary Challenges – Understanding its Implications for the Kashmir Conflict.”
The seminar brought together academics, legal experts and policy practitioners to discuss the historical, legal and geopolitical aspects of the Indus Waters Treaty and its relevance to the ongoing Kashmir dispute.
Speakers examined the treaty’s legal framework, its historical evolution and the contemporary challenges surrounding water security, international humanitarian law and regional stability.
The seminar featured presentations by Dr. Sadaqut Ali, Head of the Department of Law at GAUS; Dr. Mian Muhammad Sheraz, Associate Professor of Law at GAUS; Sardar Bakhsh, Lecturer at the National Defence University; Dr. Rashid Aftab, Director of the Riphah Institute of Public Policy (RIPP), Riphah International University; and Ameena Sohail, an energy lawyer and regulatory affairs expert.
The speakers highlighted the strategic importance of the Indus Waters Treaty and emphasized the need for informed academic dialogue on its legal, political and humanitarian dimensions. Their presentations provided participants with a deeper understanding of the treaty’s significance and its implications for regional peace, water governance and the Kashmir conflict.
