SWAT: Community elders and children joined hands for a plantation drive in Village Shagay, Union Council Saidu Sharif, as part of efforts to promote a greener and more climate-resilient Swat.
With support from UNDP Pakistan, the Hashoo Foundation implemented the Social Action Project “Community-Driven Tree Plantation and Environmental Awareness Campaign for Climate Resilience and Peace” under the broader project “Empowering Women for Peace and Environmental Justice in Swat.”
Local residents actively participated in planting indigenous fruit saplings, including plum, pomegranate, walnut and apple. The activity encouraged community ownership and a shared responsibility for protecting the local environment.
Project-trained Environmental Human Rights Defenders (EHRDs) Inamullah, Kamaluddin, Nazish Karim and Sania Said led the plantation activity. They also conducted an Insider Mediation awareness session, engaging community members on environmental protection, collective responsibility and the role of dialogue in building stronger and more peaceful communities.
Representatives of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Forest Department, Sajid Iqbal and Sadiq Ullah, also participated in the activity and highlighted the importance of tree plantation and protecting local natural resources.
The initiative was supported by the Forestry, Environment and Wildlife Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and UNDP Pakistan under the leadership of Sadia Bangash.
The community-led activity highlighted how tree plantation can bring together local people while supporting environmental protection, climate resilience and peaceful communities.
