A new virus in China, the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), has sparked global concern, especially after videos and reports surfaced showing an increase in respiratory illnesses in Chinese hospitals. Cases of HMPV, along with Influenza A, pneumonia, and COVID-19, have led to a surge in hospital admissions and a heightened alert in the healthcare system.
India confirmed three cases of HMPV in infants in Bangalore and Ahmedabad. These infants did not have any recent travel history, and no symptoms were displayed initially. Experts warn that the virus can cause flu-like symptoms and severe respiratory issues, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
HMPV was first reported in children under 14 years old in late December, suggesting a rapid spread among these vulnerable groups. The virus is transmitted through respiratory droplets and contact with contaminated surfaces.
While experts say there’s no immediate need for panic, they emphasize the importance of taking preventive measures, especially during cold weather when respiratory infections are common. There is currently no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV, so supportive treatment based on symptoms is advised.
Preventive measures include:
- Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth without washing hands.
- Wash hands frequently with soap for at least 20 seconds.
- Infected individuals should wear masks.
- Cover the mouth while coughing or sneezing.
- Infected individuals should stay home to avoid spreading the virus.
