SIALKOT: Heavy rain continued to lash Sialkot for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, prompting the district administration to launch extensive rainwater drainage operations across the city to prevent urban flooding and minimize disruption to daily life.
According to a spokesperson for the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Deputy Commissioner Awais Mushtaq directed the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to begin drainage work immediately after the downpour started. All disposal stations remained fully operational, while WASA teams worked continuously to clear garbage and debris from drains to ensure the smooth flow of rainwater.
The deputy commissioner visited Rangpura, Shahabpura Road, and Zahra Memorial Chowk to inspect the ongoing drainage operations. During the visit, he instructed WASA officials to continue pumping out accumulated rainwater without interruption and keep all field teams deployed until the situation returned to normal.
Managing Director WASA Faisal Shahzad briefed the deputy commissioner on the performance of disposal stations and the progress of drainage activities across the city.
With further rainfall forecast, the deputy commissioner directed all relevant departments to remain on high alert. He said rivers, nullahs and seasonal waterways were being monitored continuously, while the District Emergency Operations Center (DEOC) was functioning round the clock to coordinate emergency response efforts.
The district administration also issued a public advisory urging residents to avoid ponds, waterlogged areas and seasonal drains, refrain from touching electric poles or damaged power lines, and limit unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.
