As I was going about my daily business, the Call Me Bae teaser from Prime Video India appeared on my stream with a dazzling explosion. I don’t typically binge watch Indian television shows. They certainly have their appeal, but I’m more of a fan of “Watching British people drink tea and solve murders.” However, this trailer? I laughed so hard at this in the middle of a fairly calm restaurant that I got some very weird looks from other patrons.
The lowdown
The always stylish Ananya Panday plays Bella “Bae” Chowdhary, who is shown in the teaser living the high life in New Delhi. And when I say dream, I mean the kind that involves “seven luxury cars, a chopper, and a fairytale wedding.” She possesses everything: wealth, good looks, and expensive labels that I am unable to pronounce. But the universe chooses to knock her back to reality just as we’re all reveling in her seemingly ideal life. Bae has the courage to be rejected by her family and is suddenly cast out into the less fashionable and turbulent streets of Mumbai.

This is where things start to become intriguing. Bae is no longer the spoilt princess; instead, she is a young woman attempting to make ends meet without her Swiss watches and silk pillows as a safety net. She goes on an interview for a journalism position because, well, why not move from wealth to writer’s block? Because nothing shouts character development like unexpected friendships and alliances, she begins to make them along the road.
Splurging in the name of style
Concerning progress, may we discuss Ananya’s attire in the teaser? It appears as though Emily in Paris chose to maintain the clothes budget extremely high while, happily, dialing it down a little. Get ready to drool if, like me, you love the riches-to-rags cliché and a production that lavishes lavishly on costumes and sets. I’m really excited about this one; the clothes alone will keep me interested in seeing more.
Well, it’s not only glitz and high-end purses. The story of the pampered affluent girl has been told a million times before. I’m referring to characters that I really loved, such as Sonam Kapoor’s Ayesha and Alia Bhatt’s Shanaya in Student of the Year.
