GOLAGHAT, ASSAM: A wild elephant in Assam’s Golaghat district was given a new lease of life after a large tractor tire became trapped around its neck, restricting its movement and posing a serious threat to its health and survival.
The elephant was spotted wandering with the heavy tire lodged around its neck, highlighting the potentially devastating impact that discarded human waste can have on wildlife and natural habitats.
A coordinated night-time rescue operation was subsequently launched by the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) in Kaziranga, with support from the Golaghat Forest Division and members of the local community.
Rescue personnel safely immobilized the elephant before carefully removing the tire from around its neck. The operation was completed successfully, allowing the animal to move freely again.
The rescue underscores the growing challenges wildlife faces as human activities increasingly overlap with natural habitats. Discarded materials such as tires, plastic, wire and other waste can become dangerous traps for wild animals.
The successful operation also demonstrated the importance of cooperation between wildlife rescue teams, forest authorities and local communities. Rapid intervention can be critical when animals become entangled in human-made objects.
Wild elephants play a vital role in maintaining forest ecosystems by dispersing seeds, creating pathways and influencing vegetation patterns. Protecting them therefore contributes not only to wildlife conservation but also to the health of wider ecosystems.
