A new study has revealed that individuals who use the internet in middle age have more than a 50% reduced risk of developing dementia later in life. According to the research, those who use the internet on smartphones (instead of computers) experience more pronounced positive effects.
Scientists believe that the vast information available on the internet benefits the brain, while social media usage can help combat loneliness, which is now considered a significant factor contributing to dementia.
An active social life and engaging in mental activities (such as puzzles or crossword games) can also support brain health. Researchers from Zhejiang University School of Medicine in China, after studying more than 12,000 dementia-free individuals, have added internet usage to the list of beneficial factors in preventing dementia.
