WhatsApp is all set to change the video calling experience with the introduction of a new Augmented Reality (AR) feature that is currently available through the Google Beta program.
This update, version 2.24.16.7, is currently only available to beta testers.
WhatsApp users who want to explore this AR feature can download the latest update from the Google Play Store. However, the feature is in the user testing phase and only a select few will have the opportunity to try it.
The new update aims to make video calls more interactive by integrating facial filters and effects. AR effects available to beta testers include a “retouch tool” to smooth the appearance of a face and a “low light mode” to improve visibility in low-light conditions.
Apart from these features, WhatsApp has introduced a background editing tool. This tool allows users to blur backgrounds that they want to keep private during video calls or replace them with different scenes and images available in the app.
This background feature is expected to be made available to desktop users as well.
The blur effect is expected to be particularly useful in professional meetings and interviews, offering users a polished, distraction-free background.
