Dandruff on your hair or shoulders is never a good look. But did you know that while dandruff appears on your hair, it actually originates from your scalp?
Dandruff is a form of skin inflammation. A study revealed that half of us will experience this condition at some point in our lives.
Each person’s scalp contains a natural balance of microorganisms known as the microbiome. However, sometimes the balance of certain types of microorganisms gets disrupted, a condition called dysbiosis, leading to dandruff. People with dandruff have an overgrowth of certain types of yeast and bacteria on their scalp compared to those with healthy skin. Therefore, people with severe dandruff should avoid applying excessive oil to their scalp.
Dr. Amy McMickle, a dermatologist at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, explained that people often mistakenly believe that dandruff and itching are caused by dry skin, which leads them to apply oil. In reality, this only worsens the situation.
Amy explained that dandruff is actually a greasy substance filled with flakes. Excess oil provides additional nutrients to harmful bacteria and yeast, which increases dandruff production. To combat dandruff, use medicated shampoos labeled for dandruff treatment. If they don’t work, your doctor may suggest alternative treatments.
