We’ve all played the staring contest game with siblings or friends during childhood, usually lasting only a minute or so. But have you ever wondered what would happen if you truly stopped blinking for an extended period?
If even just a few seconds of staring can dehydrate our eyes, imagine what could happen to your eye health if you stop blinking for several hours. A short video by the YouTube channel ‘zackdfilms’ shows what happens when you stop blinking.
The video explains that after just 30 seconds without blinking, the moisture in your eyes starts to evaporate. Within a few minutes, the first layer of moisture on your eyes will completely dry out because the eyelids rely on moisture to protect your eyes.
After about 10 minutes, your vision will become blurry as the layer of liquid covering your eyes deteriorates. After several hours, all the moisture will be gone, leading to severe damage to the cornea, which could result in vision loss.
It’s important to note that we typically blink between 14,000 and 19,200 times a day. Blinking is crucial to maintaining eye health.
