In an effort to address concerns surrounding recent Pakistani elections, the US House Foreign Affairs Committee has passed a resolution aimed at promoting democracy, transparency, and human rights in the country.
The resolution, which received unanimous support with 50 votes in favor and none against, will now go to the House of Representatives for further discussion and approval. The resolution, tabled on September 30, 2023, but voted just yesterday, highlights several key demands regarding Pakistan’s electoral process.
It calls for ensuring transparent elections, respect for human rights, and adherence to the principles of the rule of law. In addition, the resolution emphasizes the need for an investigation into allegations of interference and irregularities during the February 8 election.
In addition, the resolution calls on both US President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to engage in increased dialogue and cooperation with Pakistani authorities to address these concerns and promote democratic principles in the region. She also called for transparent elections in Pakistan that are in line with the aspirations of the people.

The committee’s decision comes after a recent hearing held on March 20 focused on post-election democracy in Pakistan. US Ambassador Donald Lu was present during the hearing and provided insights and perspectives on the situation.
He also categorically rejected allegations suggesting that the United States played any role in ousting Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan as prime minister. He reaffirmed respect for Pakistan’s sovereignty and stressed that allegations of US involvement in the removal of Imran Khan are baseless.
