ISLAMABAD: The US Embassy in Islamabad will be closed today (January 15, 2024) as part of the US Federal Government holiday, the embassy said in a statement.
“The Embassy will reopen for official business on Tuesday, January 16, 2024,” the Facebook post said.
The third Monday in January is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a federal holiday in the US where citizens celebrate the life and legacy of the famous civil rights activist and Nobel Prize winner.
King, who was assassinated on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968, is known for his nonviolent protests and marches for black equality in the US.

In 1963, more than 200,000 people from all backgrounds and walks of life marched to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., where King delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. The following year, then-President Johnson passed a law banning all racial discrimination.
At the age of 35, he was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. He announced that he would donate $54,123 in prize money to support the civil rights movement.
