HARIPUR, September 8, 2026: The Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management at the University of Haripur has commenced the Hazara Forest and Wildlife Gradient Expedition 2026, providing students with hands-on field training in forestry, timber management and high-altitude ecosystem conservation.
The first day of the field expedition focused on developing practical understanding of forestry operations and observing changes in forest ecosystems across different elevation gradients.
Students Gain Practical Experience in Timber Management
As part of the field training, students visited a local timber depot where they conducted a hands-on study of timber logs and sleepers.
The students learned practical techniques for log measurement and scaling, including determining timber volume, structural dimensions and commercial wood quality. They were also introduced to timber auction procedures, open bidding practices and mechanisms involved in determining commercial prices.
The field session further examined timber sourcing and logistics. Students traced the movement of timber from harvesting compartments to the depot and studied transportation methods and the broader timber supply chain.
Forest Ecosystems Studied Across Elevation Gradient
A major component of the expedition was the study of forest ecosystems across an elevation range of approximately 3,000 to 8,900 feet.
Students and faculty observed significant changes in forest structure and species composition across three major forest zones:
- Sub-tropical Broad-leaved Evergreen Forest
- Sub-tropical Chir Pine Forest
- Moist Temperate Forest
The gradient study enabled students to understand how elevation influences forest composition, structure and ecological characteristics.
Field Assessment at Ayubia National Park
The first day concluded with a field excursion to Ayubia National Park, where students assessed local flora and fauna and explored various aspects of protected-area management.
The field team examined habitat preservation approaches, wildlife conservation frameworks and park management policies, linking classroom learning with real-world conservation practices.
The expedition is designed to strengthen students’ practical knowledge of forestry and wildlife management while enhancing their understanding of ecosystem conservation and sustainable natural resource management.
The Hazara Forest and Wildlife Gradient Expedition 2026 reflects the University of Haripur’s emphasis on experiential learning and field-based education in forestry and wildlife sciences.
