The gold pocket watch of the captain who saved 700 people during the Titanic disaster has been sold at auction for nearly 2 million dollars.
The 18-carat Tiffany & Co. watch was given to Captain Arthur Rostron by three surviving women to help him redirect his passenger ship, the RMS Carpathia, to rescue them and others.
The auction house Henry Aldridge & Son, who sold the watch for 20 million dollars to a private collector in the United States, stated that this is the highest-priced Titanic memorabilia. The final price includes taxes and fees paid by the buyer.
Captain Rostron received the watch from the widow of the wealthiest man killed in the disaster, John Jacob Astor, along with two other widows of wealthy businessmen.
