Berlin: Nature gives amazing abilities to all kinds of creatures. One example is the fish Danionella cerebrum, which can make loud noises like airplanes.
Only 12 millimeters in diameter, Danionella cerebrum can produce sounds above 140 decibels. This is the same as the sound experienced by a person standing 100 meters away from a passenger plane.
Although this fish was discovered in the 1980s, in 2021 scientists identified a very subtle difference between this species and the closely related species Danionella translucida. This led to the official recognition of this fish as a separate species.
Recently, a research team discovered an interesting feature in Danionella’s brain. This feature not only distinguishes it from its close relatives, but also ranks high in the list of the strongest animals in the world.
Dr. Ralf Britz, an aquatic specialist at the Senckenberg Natural History Collections in Germany, said that this small fish, 10-12 millimeters in size, can produce a sound of more than 140 decibels. This is compared to the sound level of an airplane flying at a distance of 100 meters. For such a small vocal animal to make such a loud noise is amazing.
