A private healthcare center in New Delhi has successfully performed an autotransplant on the kidneys of a 6-year-old Uzbek child suffering from bilateral Wilms’ tumor, a rare form of kidney cancer that affects children.
The critically ill patient, whose kidneys were both affected, had been brought to India after unsuccessful chemotherapy in Uzbekistan. The child was treated at Fortis Escorts, Okhla, where Dr. Paresh Jain and his team performed an eight-hour-long surgery. The child is now recovering rapidly.
Doctors found that both kidneys had tumors, with the left kidney being more affected. In August 2024, the surgical team removed an enlarged lymph node from the right kidney and performed a biopsy on the left kidney. Before returning to Fortis Escorts in November, the child underwent chemotherapy in Uzbekistan. A PET-CT scan revealed the right kidney was cancer-free, while a small tumor remained on the left kidney.
The surgical team made an incision in the lower abdomen, removed the kidney, cleared the tumor, re-established blood vessels and ureters, and re-implanted the cancer-free kidney. The patient is now recovering without any complications.
