Sponges used to clean the world release trillions of microplastics every month, research has warned.
A new study published in the Journal of Environmental Science and Technology estimates that fibers from these products emit trillions of toxic microplastic particles every month that can affect human health.
These sponges incorporate plastic polymers into a soft and light abrasive foam, making them excellent cleaning tools. Known for their ability to easily clean even the toughest stains, these sponges rely on their exceptional abrasive properties.
As it expands and is used, this foam breaks into small pieces and releases microplastic fibers (MPF) into the drainage system. These toxic microplastics can reach humans through the food chain by eating wildlife and cause many health problems.
