SIALKOT: The district administration and the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) successfully carried out an emergency drainage operation after Sialkot received an average of 174 millimetres of rainfall, restoring traffic flow and normal public activity in major parts of the city.
According to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, the operation was launched on the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Deputy Commissioner Awais Mushtaq and WASA Managing Director Faisal Shehzad remained in the field throughout the rainfall to supervise drainage activities and monitor the timely removal of rainwater.
During the operation, rainwater was cleared from 18 low-lying areas, including Church Road, Mujahid Road, Shahabpura, Allama Iqbal Chowk, Sardar Begum Teaching Hospital Road, Khadim Ali Road, Darah Araian, and Kutchery Chowk, helping restore the smooth flow of traffic across the city.
Deputy Commissioner Awais Mushtaq said all available resources, including WASA’s dewatering machines, heavy equipment, and field teams, were deployed to expedite the drainage process. He added that complaints received from citizens were addressed promptly, with emergency response teams remaining active at all affected locations.
The deputy commissioner appreciated the coordinated efforts of WASA, the district administration, and other relevant departments, saying that effective planning, continuous monitoring, and a swift response enabled the authorities to provide maximum relief to residents despite the heavy monsoon rainfall.
