LAHORE: At least seven people, including two children, lost their lives and 20 others were injured in rain-related incidents across Punjab during the last 24 hours, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
The PDMA said 14 weather-related incidents were reported across the province by Saturday afternoon. Most of the casualties were caused by roof collapses, drowning, and electrocution. Heavy rainfall also damaged seven houses and killed five buffaloes.
In Lahore, three people, including a man, a woman and a child, died while five others were injured in four separate roof-collapse incidents in Bobby Plaza, Garhi Shahu Railway Colony, Saggian Pind and Kahna.
In Kasur, a man and a child were killed and three others, including a woman and two children, were injured after the roof of a house collapsed near Adda Dhing Shah on Depalpur Road.
A woman died in Faisalabad after her house roof collapsed due to heavy rain, while a child drowned in accumulated rainwater in fields near Pathan Colony in Gujranwala.
In Bahawalnagar, three people, including a man and two children, were injured in a roof-collapse incident, while another man suffered injuries after receiving an electric shock from a power pole during the rain.
Two women were injured in a roof-collapse incident in Narowal, while another woman was injured in a similar incident in Sialkot. Separate roof collapses in Nankana Sahib and Sheikhupura also left three women injured.
In Okara, two men were injured after an animal shed collapsed during the rainfall.
Speaking at a press conference, PDMA Director General Umar Abbas said that despite the ongoing monsoon spell, the flood situation in Punjab remained under control, with water levels in major rivers, including the Ravi and Sutlej, staying within normal limits.
He said the heaviest rainfall during the current monsoon spell was recorded in the Gujranwala and Rawalpindi divisions, particularly in Narowal, Jhelum and Gujrat.
The PDMA chief said authorities successfully repaired breaches in Dek Nullah near Narowal and an embankment in Sheikhupura, preventing major damage.
He added that monsoon-related incidents have so far claimed 22 lives and injured 183 people across Punjab. Citizens were advised to report emergencies through the Rescue 1122 helpline, while authorities continue monitoring ageing electricity infrastructure to reduce the risk of power-related accidents during the rainy season.
