Researchers from University College London have revealed that people living near airports are at an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes due to the noise from aircraft. The study analyzed cardiac imaging data of 3,635 individuals living near four major airports in England. The data was compared to people living in areas where the noise from airplanes is less or in regions farther away from airports.
The results indicated that people living near airports, especially in areas with higher airplane noise at night, have disrupted sleep and higher chances of heart attacks and strokes due to increased stress.
Cardiologist Dr. Gabby Keptor commented that although the study is observational and does not claim a direct cause, higher levels of airplane noise are likely to have detrimental effects on health. The research also highlights the public health impact of environmental noise pollution and calls for further research and policies to mitigate these risks.
