RAWALPINDI: Intermittent rain continued in Rawalpindi overnight, prompting all relevant departments to remain on high alert on the directives of Rawalpindi Division Commissioner Salman Ghani.
The commissioner directed the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), Civil Defence, Rescue 1122 and district administration to maintain a strong presence in low-lying areas, with heavy machinery deployed to respond to possible water accumulation and urban flooding.
He ordered authorities to strengthen drainage arrangements in vulnerable locations, including Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk Underpass, Murree Road, Dhok Khaba, Circular Road and Sadiqabad, as well as other low-lying areas of the city.
The commissioner also directed continuous monitoring of Nullah Lai amid the ongoing monsoon spell.
According to a briefing, the water level in Nullah Lai reached 17.5 feet at Kattarian and 16 feet at Gawalmandi, with authorities closely monitoring the situation.
The briefing further stated that significant rainfall had been recorded at several locations. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) recorded 95mm at Saidpur, 100mm at Bokra, 100mm at PMD, 122mm at Shamsabad, 121mm at Kacheri, 118mm at Pirwadhai and 118mm at New Kattarian.
The commissioner directed all departments to further strengthen preparedness as the current monsoon spell is expected to continue until August 21.
Citizens were urged not to throw garbage into drains and sewerage lines and not to remove manhole covers, as such practices can obstruct drainage operations and create serious safety hazards.
Residents have also been advised to contact the WASA helpline at 1129 in case of any emergency.
Authorities said field teams would continue monitoring vulnerable areas and taking necessary measures to ensure timely drainage and minimise the risk of urban flooding during the ongoing rainfall.
