ISLAMABAD: Heavy rainfall in the federal capital has exposed roof leaks at several points inside the Parliament House, with rainwater accumulating in different sections of the building.
The roof near the Senate Hall lobby reportedly developed leaks during the heavy downpour, allowing rainwater to collect on the floor. Parliament staff placed dustbins beneath the leaking sections as a temporary measure to collect the dripping water and prevent it from spreading.
The chamber of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was also reportedly affected by the rainfall. Water began dripping from the ceiling of his chamber, while rainwater also accumulated in the room of his Principal Staff Officer.
Staff members placed dustbins in the affected areas to contain the water. The persistent leakage has reportedly also started affecting the flooring inside Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s chamber.
The incidents occurred as Islamabad and Rawalpindi experienced heavy rainfall, prompting authorities to declare a rain emergency in the twin cities.
Emergency response teams and heavy machinery have been deployed at several low-lying and vulnerable locations to deal with rainwater accumulation and the risk of urban flooding.
The leakage inside the Parliament House has also highlighted concerns over the building’s roofing, drainage and maintenance arrangements, particularly during periods of intense monsoon rainfall.
Authorities in the twin cities are continuing to monitor vulnerable areas and drainage points as intermittent rain persists, while field teams remain on standby to respond to water accumulation and other rain-related emergencies.
