A new study warns that preterm babies may face difficulties in obtaining higher education and securing better employment opportunities.
Researchers reported in the journal PLOS One that preterm children are less likely to achieve higher education or secure well-paying jobs as they grow older.
The researchers further noted that the earlier a child is born, the more likely it is that their future prospects will be negatively affected.
Researcher Petros Petchliwanoglu stated, “Our findings suggest that long-term support from parents and medical professionals can help mitigate the long-term effects of preterm birth, including challenges in psychology, education, and career resources that extend beyond medical care.”
It is worth noting that approximately 10% of children worldwide are born prematurely. Experts have stated that preterm birth increases the risk of mental and developmental difficulties.
