Pakistan has made significant progress in wireless connectivity by deploying Wi-Fi 6E, the next generation of Wi-Fi technology in the 6 Gigahertz (GHz) spectrum band.
The move makes Pakistan the 10th country in the Asia-Pacific region to adopt 6GHz for Wi-Fi, joining a select group of 60 countries worldwide to unlock the band for license-free operation.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced the achievement at an event titled “Unlocking Pakistan: Enabling Next-Gen Wi-Fi in the 6GHz Band”. PTA Chairman Major General (Retd) Hafeez Ur Rehman hailed the development as a step forward and identified Pakistan as a regional leader in deploying next-generation Wi-Fi technology.
Wi-Fi 6E offers faster speeds, lower latency and greater capacity, making it ideal for applications such as online gaming, video streaming and virtual reality.
This technology will overcome congestion and latency issues in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands that currently accommodate a variety of applications, including everyday technologies such as microwave ovens, Bluetooth, and cordless phones.
The introduction of Wi-Fi 6E is part of the government’s vision for “Digital Pakistan” to connect the wave of digital innovation, empower businesses and bridge the digital divide. With this development, Pakistan is poised to develop a more inclusive digital economy and access to safer and faster internet.
Industry experts from META, Dynamic Spectrum Alliance (DSA), Jaz, Nayatel and Huawei highlighted the benefits of Wi-Fi 6E in Pakistan, including improved user experience, increased capacity and productivity. This technology is expected to lead to a brighter digital future as Pakistanis connect and interact online.
