ISLAMABAD/SHAMAKHI, Azerbaijan: Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr Musadik Malik met Türkiye’s Deputy Minister for Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change and President-designate of the upcoming UN Climate Conference (COP31), Fatma Varank, to discuss a shared vision and priorities for the global climate summit, which Türkiye will host later this year.
According to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, the meeting took place on the sidelines of the COP31 Heads of Delegation Retreat in Shamakhi, Azerbaijan.
The two sides agreed to launch joint initiatives ahead of COP31, focusing on electric mobility, electrification, energy efficiency and strengthening the recycling industry as part of broader efforts to accelerate climate action.
Dr Musadik Malik also briefed the Turkish delegation on two flagship initiatives currently under development by the ministry: the Green Field Programme and the Green University.
He said the Green Field Programme aims to promote green start-ups by supporting young entrepreneurs in developing innovative and sustainable solutions to address climate change. The proposed Green University, meanwhile, is envisioned as a global platform for research collaboration, student and faculty exchanges, and commercially viable innovation in climate and environmental sciences.
Both sides agreed that major announcements related to these initiatives would be made during COP31 and expressed their commitment to exploring broader avenues of cooperation in these priority sectors.
During the meeting, Dr Musadik Malik conveyed the Prime Minister of Pakistan’s warm greetings and best wishes to the President of Türkiye and the First Lady. He also appreciated the First Lady’s leadership and commitment to advancing climate action and environmental sustainability.
The two officials reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and promoting practical, innovative and scalable climate solutions to address shared environmental challenges.
