PESHAWAR: Pakistan’s first-ever Climate Jirga was held at the National Incubation Center (NIC), Peshawar, bringing together government officials, academics, lawmakers, civil society representatives, youth and marginalized communities to discuss climate challenges and develop locally relevant solutions.
The initiative was organized by PRCS Youth & Volunteers Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (PRCS Y&V KP) in collaboration with Global Shapers, Climate Forward Pakistan, Echoes of Earth and PRCS Y&V Mardan/Abbottabad (MA).
Using the traditional Jirga format, the event provided an inclusive platform for stakeholders to exchange perspectives on climate change, urban resilience and community-level environmental challenges.
Representatives from government departments, the Provincial Assembly, academia, NGOs and INGOs participated alongside young people and members of marginalized communities, ensuring that a broad range of voices was included in the discussion.
During the Climate Jirga, PRCS KP and MA volunteers also presented findings from the YOUR-CAP Project, highlighting urban climate and resilience challenges identified through field visits and data collection in Peshawar.
The volunteers shared insights into challenges faced by communities and highlighted youth-led initiatives aimed at addressing local environmental and climate-related issues.
The Climate Jirga also emphasised the importance of combining community knowledge with institutional expertise to develop practical solutions suited to local conditions.
Organizers said the initiative created a meaningful space for community voices, inclusive dialogue and collective action, while encouraging greater participation of young people and vulnerable communities in climate decision-making.
The event concluded with a renewed emphasis on strengthening community resilience and promoting collaborative approaches to building a more climate-resilient Peshawar and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
