Pakistan and Ethiopia have agreed to pursue city twinning and tourist interchange, as well as expanded collaboration in medicine and agricultural education.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and African Union, Atif Sharif, addressed bilateral collaboration during his visit to the historic Ethiopian city of Aksum in Tigray, where he also met with City Mayor Abeve.
Aksum, the seat of the Aksum empire (300BC-400 AD), hosted the first Islamic Hijra by Prophet Muhammad’s illustrious companions.
The ambassador and mayor decided to explore Aksum’s twinning with a Pakistani city and encourage tourism exchange. The mission visited the rich heritage sites, including the 1400-year-old Aksum kings’ memorial, cathedral, and museum.
The ambassador wrote on X that Tigray and Aksum were experiencing food scarcity and internally displaced persons (IDPs) as a result of recent civil violence and severe drought.
The ambassador, who visited IDPs residing in a school, also met with Aksum University President Professor Gebreyesus Brhane.
The professor expressed strong interest in partnering with Pakistani colleges in STEM, medicine, and agricultural education.
