Tokyo: Researchers have set a new world record for data transmission using commercially available optical fibers.
The team from Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) achieved a new record by transferring data at a speed of 402 terabits per second. This speed is approximately 5 million times faster than UK broadband.
The researchers, led by the Photonic Network Laboratory at NICT, explained that they achieved this feat by creating a system that can cover all conventional optical fiber transmission bands.
NICT announced that a new way to unlock previously untapped wavelength bands could be used in future telecommunications networks.
Discussing its work, NICT said that emerging technologies will play an important role in increasing the communication capacity of optical communication infrastructure as the demand for future data services is increasing rapidly.
