Nepal on Thursday announced its bid to include controversial spinner Sandeep Lamichhane in the T20 World Cup squad despite being denied a US visa.
Lamichane, who was recently released from eight years of rape, took to social media to express his regret at being denied a visa, calling the situation “sad”.
Nepal Cricket Association President Chatur Bahadur Chand said they are exploring all options to participate in Lamichhane. Lamichhane, the one-time face of Nepal cricket, was banned from the first team in 2022 after he was accused of raping a young woman and the decision was overturned last week.
Nepal, who are playing in their second T20 World Cup, will begin their campaign against the Netherlands in Dallas on June 4, followed by matches against South Africa, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Lamichane, who attracted huge attention for his leg-spinning prowess, had raised the profile of cricket in Nepal before his legal troubles. His return to the team reflects the passion for cricket in the Himalayan country, which gained one-day international status in 2018 thanks to Lamichha’s international success.
The T20 World Cup will begin on June 2 in the United States and the West Indies.
