ISLAMABAD, September 8, 2026: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has directed federal and provincial authorities to remain vigilant as temperatures are expected to rise across several parts of Pakistan, even as no active monsoon system is currently affecting the country.
The directions were issued during the 18th meeting of the Emergency Response Committee (ERC), held at the National Emergencies Operations Centre (NEOC), NDMA headquarters in Islamabad, under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Professor Ahsan Iqbal, who participated via video link.
The meeting was held on the directions of the Prime Minister as part of continued national-level monitoring and coordination during the Monsoon 2026 season. Chairman NDMA Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, representatives of Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs), the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), and senior officials from relevant federal ministries and departments attended the meeting.
The committee reviewed the prevailing weather situation, hydrological conditions, temperature trends, weather outlook and preparedness arrangements of federal and provincial authorities.
The NEOC presented a comprehensive situational briefing covering the latest weather forecasts, river flows, hydrological conditions and the anticipated weather pattern over the coming days.
According to the briefing, there is currently no active monsoon system affecting Pakistan, while no significant monsoon rainfall activity is expected over the next couple of days.
However, temperatures are forecast to rise in various parts of the country during the coming days. The committee consequently stressed the need for authorities to remain alert to heat-related risks, increased water demand and other impacts associated with rising temperatures, particularly in areas expected to experience higher temperatures.
The committee also emphasized continuous monitoring of vulnerable areas and the timely dissemination of weather information, warnings and advisories to the public.
Provincial authorities briefed the committee on their preparedness arrangements, availability of emergency resources, response capacities and coordination mechanisms with district administrations. Federal and provincial departments and response agencies also shared updates on their operational readiness and preparedness measures.
Particular emphasis was placed on continuous weather monitoring, timely early warnings, uninterrupted communication and maintaining the operational readiness of emergency response agencies.
Professor Ahsan Iqbal directed all concerned departments and response agencies to maintain a proactive approach and ensure effective coordination at the national, provincial and district levels.
The committee reiterated that NDMA, through the NEOC, will continue to closely monitor Pakistan’s weather and hydrological situation and issue timely advisories to relevant stakeholders.
The ongoing monitoring and preparedness efforts are aimed at ensuring that authorities remain ready to respond to changing weather conditions and protect vulnerable communities from potential climate and weather-related risks.
